Eleonora’s Falcon: Aerial Acrobat with a Story
The Eleonora’s Falcon is a graceful, medium-sized falcon with a wingspan of up to one meter. What makes this species so special is its unique breeding strategy: it nests in late summer, precisely when millions of songbirds begin their migration to Africa. These falcons hunt migrating birds mid-air, often above the sea or along cliff edges.
In Morocco, Eleonora’s Falcons nest in colonies on rocky coastal islands, including an island near Safi that hosts up to 1,500 pairs. A rare spectacle that you don’t want to miss.
From Lagoons to Cliffs
This trip combines birdwatching with landscape photography and cultural charm:
- Salé – First encounter with Eleonora’s Falcons in a coastal area just outside Rabat.
- Oualidia – A hidden gem on a lagoon, known for its tranquility and biodiversity. We photograph from a floating platform at sunrise or sunset.
- Safi – Near this coastal town lies an island where Eleonora’s Falcons breed in large numbers.
- Essaouira – A charming harbour town with a relaxed atmosphere, UNESCO World Heritage status, and a haven for coastal birds.
- Souss-Massa National Park – We end the trip in this bird-rich park near Agadir, with chances to spot species such as the Northern Bald Ibis and more.

Climate and Clothing
The climate in Morocco is ideal. It almost never rains, and October offers very pleasant temperatures, typically ranging between 18°C and 26°C.
Ideal clothing includes light (zip-off) trousers and long-sleeved T-shirts to protect against the sometimes intense sun. Sunscreen, a sunhat and sunglasses are recommended.
Regarding clothing and religion: we advise dressing respectfully with regard to the Muslim culture. That said, in larger cities you’ll notice the dress code is more relaxed. In warmer regions, sandals, T-shirts, and shorts are perfectly fine.
