Schedule
Today we travel to Spain. We intentionally include a buffer day to absorb any unforeseen circumstances. We explore the characteristic Spanish interior and photograph our first typical landscapes and wildlife.
In the Burgos region, we search for everything that lives and moves. On 12/08, we position ourselves early to experience the solar eclipse from beginning to end—an unforgettable moment.
We travel further south and settle into hides for Spanish imperial eagle, goshawk, other birds of prey, and of course the Iberian lynx. Will patience be rewarded? We certainly hope so.
Heading even further south, we dedicate extra time to the Iberian lynx. We photograph from the best hides available for this species. Several award-winning lynx images have already been taken here—who knows, maybe yours will be next!
Today we travel back home. Depending on flight schedules, we make the most of the morning.
You can choose to extend the trip with 3 additional days in hides.
After a final session, we return to Madrid and fly back to Brussels/Amsterdam. Depending on flight times, we make the most of the morning before departure.
Partnership
An exclusive, sustainable, and unique location for photographers
The photography hides are located on a private estate of no less than 3,000 hectares. Situated at an average altitude of 600 meters, the landscape is a mosaic of cork oak and holm oak forests, elms, open fields, and meadows. The estate is sustainably managed through the Iberian Lynx Life Project, in collaboration with the landowner and WWF. The natural richness of this area is truly impressive—crowned, of course, by the chance to photograph the Iberian lynx.
Total Solar Eclipse – 12 August
A solar eclipse is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena you can witness. We begin this trip with a true climax, hoping for clear skies… Returning home with images of this event alone is already something truly unique.
Iberian Lynx
Until recently, this was one of the rarest cat species in the world. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the tide has turned and populations are now recovering well. In fact, the chances of capturing stunning images have become so good that we can now offer this experience as a group tour—at the very best photography hides in the world for this species. You’ll want to be there!
CLIMATE, CLOTHING AND PHOTOGRAPHY
The weather varies greatly during this time of year, with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius and slightly cooler nights. Rain is of course possible, but you’ll mostly be in a hut and therefore stay dry.
We recommend wearing black or dark-colored clothing with long sleeves during the hut sessions to avoid reflections and remain completely unnoticed.
In addition to a good and sharp zoom lens (for example, 16–85 mm), we recommend bringing a telephoto lens with a minimum focal length of 400 mm for this photography trip to Spain. Sometimes it’s useful to also bring a smaller (tele)zoom lens, for example, if the birds are sitting nearby. If possible, bring a tripod and a bean bag as well, so you have options on site.
Before departure, we will send you a detailed information sheet.
ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT
The accommodation is arranged and tidy without too many frills. We chose a small-scale family hotel that offers the necessary flexibility. Each participant is provided with a single room. If you wish to register as a couple or with friends and share a room, you can enjoy a discount of 120 euros per person. Please clearly mention this in the comments. All local transport is included in the price.
The international flights to and from Madrid are not included in the price of this trip. For guaranteed departure, STARLING will find you suitable flights (from Charleroi, Brussels, Amsterdam or another airport of your choice). Expect to pay between 400 and 500 euros per person for your flights. You can also choose to arrange your own flights.
