Arrival in Kerkini
You travel from Brussels or Amsterdam via Sofia (Bulgaria) or Thessaloniki (Greece) to Kerkini. When departure is guaranteed, we will help you find the best flights.
Photographing pelicans
We take our time photographing the pelicans in Kerkini. Expect an intensive workshop exploring different techniques. We’re always on the lookout for other birds, such as cormorants or seagulls, that may come our way.
Transfer to the raptors
After our last morning session with the pelicans, we will head for Bulgaria after lunch and drive to Madjarovo in the eastern Rodopi mountains.
Raptor hide
We drive to the raptor hide in the morning to photograph golden eagles, vultures, foxes, and jackals until late in the afternoon.
Transfer to Dimitrovgrad
After breakfast, we relocate to Dimitrovgrad, where two photo hides await us for spotting woodland birds, woodpeckers, different species of finches, tits, and possibly buzzards. The second day, we rotate.
Transfer to Sofia – Vitosha mountain
Early in the morning, we drive to Sofia. After dropping off our luggage at the hotel, we head for Vitosha Mountain, where we will photograph nutcrackers in action.
Back to Amsterdam / Brussels
DALMATIAN PELICANS IN SIGHT
Before the Dalmatian pelicans breed, they gather on Lake Kerkini in Greece. We spend several days on the lake, photographing this once extinct species. And we go all the way, using every lens possible. Yes, even wide-angle!
Every day brings new possibilities to experiment with light and creativity. I can’t wait to share all my tips and technique with you! You will be challenged to analyse your own images and push the boundaries of your photographic skills throughout the journey.
THE MOST EXQUISITE SETTING
This isn’t just a photography trip but a hands-on workshop. Everything you learn is immediately applied in the stunning setting of Lake Kerkini.
You will learn:
- how to best operate your flash,
- use slow shutter speed
- diversify lenses according to your angle and composition
- how to control and maintain your camera
- which settings to use for images of birds in flight
- how to use the light and weather conditions to serve your composition.
THE RHODOPES, PURE WILDERNESS
The Rhodopes are a mountain chain in southern Bulgaria. This is one of the last pure parts of Eastern Europe, with picturesque villages and primeval nature. The stunning landscapes harbor many unique bird species. We’ll visit a raptor hide to look out for golden eagles and jackals and head into the woods to look for apple finches and Syrian spotted woodpeckers. Afterward, we head into the village to soak up some local culture.
INTO THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS
We end this trip visiting some very special and relatively tame nutcrackers to work on our photographic skills. It’s a rich experience as the nutcrackers come and sit on your hand! With some luck, we’ll be spoilt even more by several other bird species passing by.
TRANSPORT AND FLIGHTS
Our local transport is by minibus.
We aim to book direct flights from Amsterdam/ Brussels to Sofia. Flights are included in the price.
CLIMATE AND CLOTHING
It gets pretty chilly in the morning and evening, the most beautiful moments for us to photograph. So be sure to bring plenty of warm winter clothes to work comfortably. We’ll provide more information about what to wear and bring before departure.
