HARSH WINTER VIBES
Photographing the Arctic wolf is no ordinary task; you’ll be wrapped in a thick down parka, with a cozy hat, gloves, and seriously warm snow boots. We’ll spend hours on the tundra, tracking wolves. If we’re lucky enough to find them, one thing is certain: you’re in for a jaw-dropping spectacle. The wild landscape, combined with the harsh winter conditions, creates a surreal backdrop that fuels the imagination. You might even find yourself in a blinding snowstorm—conditions that make for the most extraordinary shots.
Each day, we head out regardless of the weather. Every condition offers a unique opportunity to capture stunning shots. You’ll learn how to master exposure in snowy conditions and how to protect both yourself and your gear from the biting cold.
ARCTIC WOLF
Our primary target? Arctic wolves, of course! But along the way, we might encounter other spectacular wildlife like musk oxen, Arctic hares, foxes, and perhaps even marine mammals. With some luck, we might even spot narwhals or belugas.
MASTERING PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES
Capturing a shot of an Arctic wolf is nothing short of thrilling. I will help you immortalize that moment with my experience, built up after countless trips to the Far North.
We will take the time to help you perfect your photography skills, no matter your camera brand or type. From shooting fast-paced action to selecting the right autofocus settings for razor-sharp images, you’ll be fully prepared. We’ll also dive deep into the challenges of shooting white subjects in white environments—a tough task for any camera. And before we venture into the cold, we’ll ensure you’re thoroughly prepared. Before departure, we’ll hold an info session to get acquainted and go over the trip details in depth.
ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT
The tour we offer is a 16-day tour. Participants have to catch a scheduled flight from Resolute Bay to Grise Fiord (non-charter). We can assist with these flights. Then we drive by snowmobile and sleigh from Grise Fiord to Eureka Base Camp (3 days). We make day trips out of the Eureka Basecamp area (10 days). We drive by snowmobile and sleigh back to Grise Fiord (3 days) to catch your scheduled flight back south.
We’ll camp at the site, and comfortable camping gear is included. All local transportation and meals are also covered.
For the journey to Eureka, you can choose to snowmobile, take a mix of snowmobiling and flying, or fly the entire way. Shelter, Bedding, Sleeping Bag, Food and Generator included. It is not needed to drive the snowmobile yourself.
CLIMATE, CLOTHING AND PHOTOGRAPHY
This expedition covers a large part of Ellesmere Island, with opportunities to encounter wildlife and the possibility of spotting wolves near Grise Fiord. Conditions are demanding, with long days traveling over valleys, glaciers, sea ice, snowdrifts, and rough ice, often exposed to strong winds and extreme cold. With proper preparation, gear, and clothing, this journey offers an unparalleled high Arctic experience.
Temperatures typically range from –5 to –30 °C, with lower wind chills. Proper clothing is essential, and I will advise you on how to dress for these conditions. Hand-sewn local winter outerwear (parka, pants, boots, mitts, and hats) is available upon request.
Photography will focus on action shots. Fast cameras with 200–600 mm lenses are recommended, along with lens covers, plenty of spare batteries, large high-speed memory cards, and a laptop with fast card readers and storage.
